Something is going down in/around my area tonight, which isn't surprising considering I live smack-dab in the middle of dodgy south London. More specifically, my shit digs are located in the middle of this small vein of semi-less dodgy housing which is surrounded by epic ghetto lands and a rapist park.
Situation: I'm headed to the local late-night grocery to pick up some stuff and as I'm walking a mini bus FULL of policemen [and policewomen] pull up sort of beside me, which is a bit awkward considering I'm walking along a VERY small back residential road. A mini bus full of police is a white elephant that is a bit hard to ignore, and not only that, there was another police cruiser behind the mini bus.
Let me paint you a picture of the scene. Right now I'm dressed in sweatpants, sweatshirt, black coat and ballet flats, lookin' about as chav as ever, and I'm doing a mental check over my person trying to make sure I don't have anything illegal on me in case this entire bus load of police jump out and arrest me. Why they would do that is beyond me, but in situations like this you never know. My mental check went so far as to imaging my explanation for the small swiss army knife I have on my key chain. Also it's dark, no one is out, and I'm half convinced I'm about to get deported.
We go another 10 yards, and by this time the mini bus had pulled ahead of me, or so I thought, and all of a sudden the bus is stopped and the police are swarming out of the mini bus -- ALL OF THEM, including the ones in the cruiser and they're all running at this apartment complex.
The only thing going through my mind is, "holy shit, holy shit, something is going down and all I have is this damn pocket knife and I'm going to get shot or someone is going to start throwing drugs."
Again, why people would be throwing drugs, I'm not really sure, but it went through my mind which was why I had my baby swiss army knife at the ready.
So then I see that the officers have stopped running (with their hands still tucked into their chest vests, lol) and sort of stood there awkwardly for a moment and it is THEN that I see that there is a black couple standing there, and the girl is waving them off... all 15 or so policemen. I then watch every single officer climb sheepishly back into their mini bus and drive away with their police cruiser in tow.
All I can say is well done there, ladies and gents. Racial profiling is refreshing, isn't it?
